Lisa's Story: From Burnout to Building a Life She Loves

Posted on Dec 05, 2024

As a former teacher and executive assistant, Lisa faced burnout and needed a change

Her answer came in the form of a kids crafting business—a dream that felt risky at first, but one that would ultimately change her life.

Here’s how Lisa overcame her doubts, found support through CCC Academy, and built a life that gave her freedom, purpose, and happiness.

 Rediscovering Her Passion

Lisa spent a decade as a special education teacher but ended up feeling burnt out. She transitioned into a role as an executive assistant at a bank, which lightened the load but it wasn’t her true passion.

“I just felt like I wasn’t really living my truth. I wasn’t really doing what I was put here for,” Lisa recalls.

Becoming a first-time mom gave her the clarity she needed to make a change.

“I wanted to be an example for my daughter, to see, ‘Wow, my mom is chasing her dreams and really doing what she wants to do rather than being unhappy in her 9-to-5,’ which I was.”

Lisa realized she needed a career that blended her skills, creativity, and a flexible schedule to fit her new life.

Starting her kids crafting business felt like a big leap, but it allowed her to combine everything she loved in a way that truly worked for her.

Reflecting on her journey, Lisa said, “For my daughter to see that I am chasing my dreams and I’m working really hard but I’m happy doing it—that’s what I want her to see. I want her to know that you don’t have to just fit somewhere you don’t really want to be. You can go after something that you really love.”

Her daughter’s growth also inspired her. “She loves art now, and I really do think it’s because she’s exposed to it so much. She expresses herself well, and I really do attribute a lot of that to her coming to these classes.”

 Finding Support Through CCC Academy

Starting her business wasn’t without its challenges. “I was struggling with all the administrative tasks and all the other to-dos in my business. Coming up with lesson plans takes a lot of time, especially with mom life—it was a lot,” Lisa shares.

The CCC Kids Curriculum provided the support Lisa needed to streamline her lesson planning and save her time.

“I was so happy I found you guys. The layout of the curriculum is great—you can go through all the lessons by ages and holidays. I use it as the basis for most of my classes. Sometimes I tweak it based on if it’s a toddler group or something else, but it’s been a huge help.”

 Embracing Flexibility

One of the biggest benefits of running her own crafting business is the flexibility it provides. “If I need to cancel a class or take a break, it’s totally fine,” Lisa explains. “I can just reschedule the class for the next week, and everyone understands.”

This flexibility has been a game-changer for her, allowing her to manage her business in a way that fits her life rather than feeling stuck in a rigid schedule.

What Starting a Club Has Made Possible For Lisa

“It has changed my life completely. It’s made it possible for me to be a more present mom. It’s also given me a lot of flexibility in my life so far as everyday errands and to do’s. That was really big for me.”

 Connecting with the Community

Lisa has also found opportunities to collaborate with local businesses.

She has partnered with a restaurant to host events like her Hot Cocoa with Santa on Gingerbread Lane workshop.

“Families will come to the restaurant, and I’ll bring all the supplies. They’ll make crafts together as a family, enjoy a hot cocoa bar, and even get a visit from Santa. It’s a nice little bundle with a lot of different things for people to do.”

These collaborations help Lisa grow her business and connect with her community. “I handle signups through my website, and the restaurant and I split the work. It’s been a great system.”

 Simplifying Her Business with WebHub

To manage her growing business, Lisa turned to WebHub, CCC’s all-in-one website and business management software. “Before WebHub, I was using a free platform that wasn’t doing everything I needed. WebHub made things so much easier,”

Lisa shares. “I use it for events, classes, invoicing, tracking payments, and conversations with clients. It’s been very helpful.”

Lisa’s Advice for Aspiring Business Owners

Today, Lisa is proud of the life she’s built. Her journey is a testament to what’s possible with the right support, determination, and resources.

If you’ve ever considered starting a business teaching arts & crafts to kids, Lisa’s story shows that it’s possible to create a life filled with creativity, connection, and purpose.

“Find your inspiration, set aside the time, and really dream up what you envision for yourself,” she says. “Even if it doesn’t end up panning out that exact way, it gets you into action. You expand as you go.”
